This article or section requires information involving Pikmin 4. This includes, but is not limited to, new infobox data, new images, and new information in general.

Yellow Pikmin (黄ピクミン, Ki Pikumin) are the second type of Pikmin discovered in Pikmin, the fourth in Pikmin 2,  and the third in Pikmin 3 and Pikmin 4, although they also appear at the very beginning during Charlie's tutorial. These Pikmin have what appear to be very large ears; the means by which they are primarily identifiable. It is not known, however, whether or not this actually aids to their hearing. They also appear to prefer elevated habitats, such as trees. In all three games, the Yellow Pikmin are the second lightest Pikmin type and can be thrown higher than other Pikmin. This is an ability which is needed to retrieve certain elevated objects.

The abilities of Yellow Pikmin vary more in the series than any other member of the species. Yellow Pikmin are the only Pikmin able to wield bomb rocks in Pikmin. In Pikmin 3, Yellow Pikmin can dig the fastest. In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Yellow Pikmin can deal electrical damage to enemies.

Appearances[]

Pikmin[]

In Pikmin, Yellow Pikmin are discovered in The Forest of Hope inside an inactive Yellow Onion. In this first game, they are exclusively able to carry explosive Bomb Rocks, which can be used to defeat enemies or demolish gates, and are required to demolish reinforced gates. Improper handling of Bomb Rocks can result in accidental friendly fire, so caution is advised.

In the New Play Control! version of Pikmin, Yellow Pikmin do not drop Bomb Rocks when whistled at like in the Nintendo GameCube version.

Pikmin 2[]

In Pikmin 2, one can find these pointy-eared Pikmin in the Perplexing Pool at the end of a long and twisted path sitting atop a tree. Red Pikmin are needed to defeat a Fiery Bulblax, and White Pikmin are needed to demolish a Poison Bramble Gate. Yellow Pikmin are immune to electricity, but Yellow Pikmin no longer have the ability to carry Bomb Rocks. This may be explained by the rocks' increased size in Pikmin 2, making them impossible to carry.

Pikmin 3[]

In Pikmin 3, players are able to discover Yellow Pikmin on their first day at the Distant Tundra when taking control of Charlie. As a new ability, Yellow Pikmin gained conductivity, which allows Yellow Pikmin to link up by holding hands, and pass electricity from a broken circuit. As a result, the object the wires were originally connected to gains power, and the Yellow Pikmin grow flowers on their heads. Yellow Pikmin also dig faster than other types of Pikmin and they make higher-pitched sounds when thrown in Pikmin 3. Yellow Pikmin are also able to throw Bomb Rocks once again, though now all other varieties of Pikmin can wield them.

Hey! Pikmin[]

In Hey! Pikmin, Yellow Pikmin weigh as much as other Pikmin and emits electricity when thrown, creating a pool of electricity upon landing.

Crossover appearances[]

An official screenshot of a Yellow Pikmin in Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Yellow Pikmin appear in Super Smash Bros. Brawl as a type of Pikmin that Olimar can pull from the ground using Pikmin Pluck. Yellow Pikmin, like in Pikmin 2 and Pikmin 3, are immune to electrical moves like Pikachu's Thunder or Forward Smash and can attack with electric properties. They can also be thrown higher than other Pikmin.

There is also a trophy and a sticker of a Yellow Pikmin, the latter depicting artwork of it laying down from Pikmin. Furthermore, a Yellow Pikmin is depicted in the Yellow Pellet sticker, since it depicts artwork of a Yellow Pikmin carrying one from Pikmin 2.

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U[]

In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, Yellow Pikmin are once again the type of Pikmin that Olimar can pluck from the ground using his Pikmin Pluck; this can also be done by Alph, introduced as his echo fighter. Both games have a trophy of three Yellow Pikmin on a Face Wrinkler.

Notes[]

Hey! Pikmin Pikmin Log[]

"Their ears may be big, but their bones are very light, so they can be thrown to great heights where other Pikmin can't reach. Their other unique strength is the ability to shrug off anything that can shock or zap them."

Olimar's Voyage Log (Pikmin 4)[]

"I decided to call the yellow-colored Pikmin with large earlike appendages "Yellow Pikmin". I liked that name a lot more than Ear Pikmin. They're resistant to electricity, and they fly high when thrown. Plus, they're good at digging."

Dalmo's Notes[]

"Look at the extraordinarily big, pointy ears on the adorable Yellow Pikmin! I doubt you can whisper a secret they won't hear. Try throwing one. They can easily retrieve objects for you from places you can't reach! Also electricity doesn't faze it at all. They're shockingly useful guys!"

Olimar's Notes[]

"Its generally believed that the Pikmin body was originally the root of a planet that has evolved over centuries, if not millennia, developing structures analogous to muscles, neural networks similar to those of a brain and more.

However, Yellow Pikmin possess a perfect resistance to electricity, a force which actually poses extreme danger to other organisms. Oddly enough, this species of Pikmin actually seems to...enjoy electricity! Their flowers even bloom when they are exposed to an electric current. This fact would lead one to believe that their neural-transmission methods are quite different than our own.

This species often uses the ear-like lamellae on its head to soar to great heights and dig holes."

Louie's Notes[]

"When I look at it, all I see is ears."

Description
NTSC: This yellow Pikmin is sporting some pointy things on its head. Maybe those are ears? Hmm... Anyway, yellow Pikmin are immune to electricity and are the lightest Pikmin in the Pikmin series. In Smash Bros., a thrown yellow Pikmin will fly through the air in a nice curve, zapping anyone it comes in contact with.

PAL: Yellow Pikmin have big, sharp ears and conduct electricity very well. These two facts are most likely unrelated. Olimar's side special can throw this Pikmin high into the air and cause electrical damage to all fighters who stray too close!

Trivia[]

  • Unlike the Pikmin series, Yellow Pikmin have normal throw height in Pikmin Adventure.
  • In Pikmin, there are unused textures found of all stages of Red Pikmin and Blue Pikmin carrying Bomb Rocks. This was removed for some reason, and thus that ability became exclusive to Yellow Pikmin. This restriction was most likely chosen to give the Yellow Pikmin more significance, as the ability to be thrown higher than other Pikmin does not come into play as often as the other types' more prominent abilities, and electrical hazards were not added until Pikmin 2. The universal ability to wield Bomb Rocks was later added in Pikmin 3.
  • Yellow Pikmin are a Pikmin type to have a unique voice, alongside Rock Pikmin, Winged Pikmin, Juvenile Bulbmin, Ice Pikmin, and Glow Pikmin.
